HARROD WINS EAST ALABAMA
By Jay Vaquer
Phenix City, ALA - April 7, 2007 - Easter’s mysteries continued to mystify the crowd at East Alabama Motor Speedway this weekend. Some of the unexplained questions were, how did Jesus come back from the dead and how did he move that big rock from out of the cave? And how does the Easter bunny lay eggs? And how did Larry Harrod totally dominate the field of Late Model champions to take the checkers wire to wire? Harrod won the pole with fast time qualifying and began the feature from the inside. As he led the field to the cone in turn 4 where he fires first to begin the race, he delayed firing at the cone and the anxious field behind began to pile up and push the leaders through turn 4. Former Late Model Champion JR Moseley, who has been exceptionally fast this year, was on the outside pole and got punted into the outside retaining wall. Moseley suffered serious damage to his rear suspension and was forced into the pits for a DNF. Josh Noles was also caught up in the mishap and went to the pits for repairs. Then next start had Harrod pulling away from the field. Marvin Cook in second, and the legendary Dana Eiland from third gave chase. Rusty Harmon, the incumbent Open wheel Modified Champion was running his very first Late Model race and took a look inside Eiland but quickly retreated to a comfortable fourth position. Jerry Summers and Jeff Mills were sparring over fifth and Mills was very strong and held his ground. Meanwhile , back at the front Harrod was really pouring it on and was almost a full straightaway ahead of Dana Eiland in third. Cook’s tires seem to be dialing in and he was running down the leader and show signs of presenting a challenge. At lap 14 Matt Woodson seemed to be fighting a problem and slowed considerably. Then our current Late Model Champion Tod Darda lost the pace and began to slow and brought out a caution. Summers went to the pits as well as did Mike Parkerson. On the restart Tod Darda made an all out attack on Chad Marchman who had been driving a hard but calculating race staying out of trouble and maintaining his position. Marchman had all the right answers to keep Darda at bay and held on to his position. As the laps wound down and the white flag came out, Cook was gaining on the leader but Harrod was a hard Easter egg to crack and Cook ran out of laps as Harrod took the checkers for his first win this season. Marvin Cook finished second, Dana Eiland third, Rusty Harmon fourth, Jeff Mills fifth, Chad Marchman sixth, Tod Darda seventh, Matt Woodson eighth, Jerry Summers ninth, and Josh Noles rounded out the top ten in tenth.
