Stokes and Stephens Take Top Magnolia Honors
Columbus, MS-A huge field of cars of over 140 entrants invaded the Magnolia Motor Speedway for a Sunday night special event to take on the infamous “Black Ice” at The Mag. The main events of the evening would be for the touring 4 Crown Modified Series along with the Super Late Models and would play before the biggest crowd of the year.
The 4 Crown Modified Series event would see a strong field of 43 teams on hand with Atwood, Tennessee’s TJ Herndon setting fast time. Herndon would not be able to repeat his qualifying success in the main event as Arlington, Tennessee’s Shane Stephens would take the win followed by Vernon’s Jason Brock and Memphis racer Brandon Poppenheimer. Rounding out the top five were Shay Knight and Chris Moore.
The Super Late Model event was a story in itself. After winning the Late Model Stock event at his own Columbus Speedway on Saturday night in a borrowed car, Johnny Stokes decided to kick it up another notch and enter the Super Late Model event at Magnolia Motor Speedway on Sunday evening in his own 400 horsepower 604 Crate Late Model typically used in the Stormpay Late Model division. Dr. Dirt would start the feature race in the 6th spot after qualifying lining up behind polesitter Anthony Rushing, Dane Dacus, Mike Boland, Rodney Wing (also in a Crate engine powered car), and Ronny Lee Hollingsworth in the 30-car field.
Despite being obviously overpowered, Stokes would use his seasoned driving skills to move quickly into 5th, then 4th place at the start of the caution-free feature running the extreme bottom of the "Black Ice" racing surface. The black #1 NeSmith Chevrolet/Hoosier Racing Tire South/Jay Dickens Racing Engines-sponsored machine passed Anthony Rushing to take second place around midrace of the 20-lapper, then started reeling in distant leader Dane Dacus as Dacus began to navigate lapped traffic.
Stokes would move under Dacus at the exit of turn 4 with just a few laps remaining, then close the deal by pulling into the lead at the exit of turn 2. The sinister-looking black Mastersbilt - built for Stormpay.com series competition - would then pull away in the final two laps as Stokes drove on to the win. Dacus and Ronny Lee Hollingsworth would complete the top three. Rounding out the top five in the Rebel Challenge Weekly Racing Series event were Anthony Rushing and Scott Dedwylder.
The Stormpay Late Model class saw a season high 21 entrants with Gilbertown, Alabama’s Terry Mosley taking the win Bryant Milam and Colby Hillhouse completing the podium. Finishers fourth and fifth were Jamie Pickard and Mark Stokes. The Late Model Stock class saw a familiar name in Victory Lane as Fulton, MS’s Eric Cooley took another win followed by TK King and Chance Inman. The always exciting Street Stock class had Coker, AL’s Trey Bright take the win with Trinity Wyers hot on his heals and Kevin Monahan completing the top 3 finishers in the 19 car field.
The next event at Magnolia Motor Speedway will be the prestigious 4th Annual Governor’s Cup on Saturday night June 9th. The big event features a 60-lap $5,000 to win Super Late Model championship plus all local divisions competing including Open Wheel Modifieds, Late Model Stock, Street Stock, Stormpay Late Models, and the addition of the Mini Stock class.
