Columbus Speedway December News & Notes
Please mark Saturday night January 6th at 6:30pm central time down on your calendars as the Lucas Oil Late Model Series James Nickoles Memorial from Columbus Speedway will be broadcast on Speed TV. There may be a second showing the following Sunday morning as well. The preview of the video at the PRI show was great and the televised event will be a big step forward for national recognition for the level of racing and racers in the Alassippi area.
Make sure to visit or call Sports Plus Video to get a copy of the Possum Town Grand Prix. They do a great job with the videos and Rick Eshelman did the play by play. ALL classes were covered on the DVD. They also have the entire World of Outlaw Late Model show from Columbus Speedway along with all the major events including the World 100, East Bay Winter Nationals, etc…For more information please visit www.sportsplusvideo.com or call 301-223-4525.
The annual banquet is coming up Saturday night January 13th. It will be held at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church fellowship hall. For tickets please call Barbara Stokes at 327-3047.
The next racing event at Columbus Speedway will be 7th Annual Carl Hogan Honda Winter Classic on January 27th at 2pm. The event will feature Super Late Models paying $3,000 to win, Stormpay Late Model Series paying $2,500 to win, plus Open Wheel Modifieds $1,000 to win and Street Stocks $300 to win. Practice will be on Friday the 26th from 5pm until 8pm. Click on the event flyer for event details including rules, purses, tickets, and hotels.
Of note, Johnny Stokes got a call on December 12th and was informed by Kenny Schrader himself that he and Kenny Wallace want to be the first entries for the Winter Classic. Both drivers are popular NASCAR racers and personalities and it should be fun to have them competing at The Bullring.
The 2007 schedule is up. It will have some more subtle changes, but the majority of the schedule is firm. Another great year on tap including the World of Outlaw Series, Lucas Oil Series, Southern All Stars, SUPR, USCS Sprints, a first time appearance from the Southern Regional Late Model Series, the return of the Stormpay.com National Series plus major independent events highlighted by the Magnolia State 100 paying $25,007 to win, plus the Rebel Challenge, along with the James King Memorial, John l Cliett Tribute, James Nickoles Memorial and book end events starting off with the Winter Classic and finishing with the Possum Town Grand Prix.
Other events on the horizon will be the return of what is now the Firecracker 6 Crown Summer Speedweek that will see the series start off at Duck River Speedway on June 28th, move to Moulton Speedway on the 29th, on to the Bullring on Saturday night June 30th, across the river to Magnolia Motor Speedway on July 1st. The series will then move to Talladega Short Track on Monday night July 2nd and culminate at North Alabama Speedway in Tuesday night July 3rd. This should be the best ever Summer Speedweek that has been put together. Six races in six nights! Thanks to all the participating tracks for working together to make this happen and for all the drivers and fans who have supported the series making it possible to continue to grow.
Tracks also have worked together again for the return of the Modified 4 Crown Series this year. It will get going at Moulton Speedway on Friday night May 25th, then to Columbus Speedway on the 26th, over to Magnolia Motor Speedway on the 27th and finish up at North Alabama Speedway for a Monday night special on Memorial Day. This should be a great series for all the area Modified aces.
As always, there will be stand alone local division championships during the season as well as added money events for the classes on the mega shows.
The 2007 rules are also released and posted in the rules area on the website. There are very, very few rule changes this season.
Classes competing during as part of the Weekly Racing Series will be Rebel Challenge Weekly Racing Series, Stormpay Late Models, Late Model Stocks, Open Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Mini Stocks.
New for 2007 will see points combined between Columbus Speedway and Magnolia Speedway. The goal is to create cross over competition which hopefully will increase car counts, which then result in an increase in purse money for the drivers. The fans benefit from having larger fields providing more exciting racing. The combined points will allow the Super Late Model drivers to benefit in the Rebel Challenge Series due to the nature of the points, and also with the Stormpay Late Models resulting in a larger point fund for them as well.
Speaking of the Rebel Challenge Series for the Super Late Models…drivers should look to find a revamped point system for Robert Brown’s series for the weekly racer allowing for tracks in the Columbus area to provide for great point racing opportunities and for the area drivers to compete for the championship. There are 18 RCWRS events on the 2007 combined Columbus-Magnolia track calendar. Other things may evolve with the series that could really benefit the local drivers. More other good things to come as there will be renewed focus on the weekly shows…stay tuned.
Teams should call Johnny Stokes at 662-574-2572 to renew reserved pit parking spaces or for answers to any questions that may come up.
Thanks to all drivers, teams, fans, sponsors, and to everyone in the extended Columbus Speedway family that make it all happen.
Everyone have a happy and safe holiday season.
