Columbus, MS - Saturday night at Columbus Speedway, Josh Richards claimed his second career World of Outlaws series Super Late Model victory.
Starting from the pole of the $10,000-to-win, 50-lap feature event alongside Tim McCreadie, Richards would take the early lead as Shane Clanton battled with McCreadie for second place ahead of Darrell Lanigan. Clanton would move into the position before a lap 3 caution for Clint Smith. McCreadie would then race his way back into second place as Billy Moyer and Eddie Carrier, Jr. raced door-to-door for 5th before a second caution on lap 7 with Richards, McCreadie, Clanton, Lanigan, and Carrier in the top five.
Lanigan would fall quickly following the restart, with McCreadie and Clanton left to chase the strong #1 machine of Richards. Clanton would move around McCreadie on lap 8 as Wendell Wallace moved up to 4th place. Moyer went below Wallace on lap 12, taking the position away before caution fell on lap 14 for Jay Blair. Richards would lead Clanton, McCreadie, Moyer, and Wallace in the top five.
Moyer would drive between McCreadie and Clanton on the restart, then fall back to battle McCreadie as Clanton held on to second place. Ronny Lee Hollingsworth moved up to 5th on lap 16, only to give the position back to Wallace on the following lap as McCreadie and Clanton fought side-by-side for second. Richards reached lapped traffic by lap 24, with Clanton and McCreadie joining him two laps later before a lap 28 caution fell for John Blankenship with Richards, Clanton, McCreadie, Moyer, and Wallace in the top five.
Rick Eckert would bring out a quick caution on the next lap, then the top three cars would duke it out as the battling Clanton and McCreadie seemed to find equal footing with Richards. McCreadie took second place from Clanton as Clanton came close to hitting the turn 4 wall while challenging Richards, and Moyer also moved around Clanton to go after the leaders. With the top three running in close ranks, a lap 32 caution for Wallace broke up the action. Richards continued to lead McCreadie, Moyer, Clanton, and now Dale McDowell in the top five.
McCreadie would unseat Richards after running a full lap door-to-door after the restart, with Moyer then looking to pass for second place unsuccessfully. Moyer would settle for a three-wide battle for 3rd with Clanton and McDowell until a lap 36 incident forced him out of contention with McCreadie leading Richards, Clanton, Chub Frank, and Rick Rickman to the restart.
Lap 39 brought about another caution as Garrett Durrett pulled to a stop on the track, wiping out a second-place pass by Clanton, but allowing Eric Jacobsen enough time to slip into the to five. Clanton battled Richards for second as Jacobsen went after Frank on the restart, soon joined by Rickman to make it a brief three-way battle.
The final caution would fall on lap 46, setting up a 4-lap dash with McCreadie, Richards, Clanton, Frank, and Jacobsen in the top five. Richards would dive under McCreadie and the two would race around the high-banked oval side-by-side for two laps until Richards finally retook the lead as lap 48 was scored. Door-to-door the pair would go once again while Jacobsen moved around Frank and challenged Clanton for third place. Richards would make it to the checkers over McCreadie, followed by the close pair of Clanton and Jacobsen and then Frank in the final top five.
The open-wheel Modified feature victory would go to Shay Knight, taking the win over Lee Ray, Chris Moore, and Tony Gray. Joey McKinney would take the win int he Late Model Stock/Stormpay.com Crate Late Model feature over Wayne Beckwith, TK King, Jody Guest, and Eric Cooley. Danny Gable beat out Shane Hawkins, Kris Monahan, Tony Silvestri, and Chance Inmon for the Street Stock win.
