Columbus, MS - Weekly racing action resumed at Columbus Speedway Saturday night with 114 race teams filling the pits including 21 Commercial Dispatch Super Late Models and 27 Street Stock Summer Championship competitors.
Shawn Edwards would set fast time to share the front row of the Super Late Model main event with Ricky Rawson. Edwards would grab the early lead and drive off to take a straightaway advantage as Rawson surrendered second place to Mark Dodson on lap 3. Jimbo McDuffie charged from very deep in the field up to 3rd place by lap 4, then went door-to-door for second place on lap 7 as Edwards held a commanding lead.
McDuffie would take over the spot from Dodson on the next lap as Edwards began to navigate traffic. Through a trio of late cautions, Roger Shirley moved around Dodson to take third place, then began racing with McDuffie, claiming second place before the final caution on lap 17 set up a three - lap dash with Edwards leading Shirley, Mcduffie, Dodson, and Dewayne Estes.
Though Shirley appeared to be reeling in Edwards before the final caution, there would be no challenge for the lead as track points leader Edwards raced just out of reach. McDuffie would charge back in on Shirley to make another run at second place, retaking the position before the white flag fell. Shirley would stay outside McDuffie and drive off the corners to retake the spot as Edwards dashed to the checkers to take his first win of the season. Shirley, McDuffie, Dodson, and Estes earned top-five honors with Greg Aldridge, Ricky Rawson, Paul Faucett, Tombo Callahan, and Terry Wilson in the top ten. Edwards would earn $1,300 in winnings including contingencies for fast time and for winning with a Brown Engineering powerplant.
In Street Stock Championship event action, Danny Gable would give up the lead to Trey Bright on the first lap. Bright, Gable, and David Honeycutt would hold down the top three as a series of cautions plagued the early laps of the event. Gable would spin out of contention on lap 8, and Stan Lee shortly moved in to challenge Honeycutt for 2nd place by lap 10.
Bright would spin on a lap 13 caution, with Dustin Crowley also finding hard luck, getting into the frontstretch wall after making an impressive charge from deep in the field into the top five. Honeycutt would be given the lead, but would be sent to the rear of the pack for violating the rule against stopping on the racetrack.
Craig Barham would lead the rest of the way, racing to take the $500 win over Kevin Monahan, Terry Kelley, the rebounding Gable, and Wesley Blair. Harold Trimm, Mark West, Gene Thomas, Chris Taylor, and Blaine Davis completed the top ten.
Jeremy Shaw would post his second consecutive win in the Open Wheel Modified division, leading the way virtually uncontested over a strong battle for second between Brian Rickman and Tony Gray. Shaw would take the checkers ahead of the 18-car field with Rickman, Gray, Lee Ray, and Shay Knight following in the top five.
In Stormpay.com Crate Late Model action, Jamie Pickard took the lead early following a first-lap incident between Mike Shirley and Cody Swink. Pickard would battle side-by-side with Darrell Guess in the waning laps and go on to take his first career win as the two cross the finish line door-to-door. Tony Shelton, Andy Robinson, and Shirley would finish in the top five.
Ruble Maxey would revisit victory lane in the Late Model Stock division. Maxey would take the win over Billy Franklin, Jason Sanderford, Jeremy Glasgow, and Philip Dean.
Michael Pendley claimed the Mini Stock victory, leading Allen Gilreath and Jackie Pendley to the finish line. Brad Fortner & Brian Fortner took the Cruiser win, and Ben Williams returned to victory lane in the Hot Shot division.
Columbus Speedway returns to action next Saturday night, August 12 with a full Weekly Racing Series program including the Commercial Dispatch Rebel Challenge Super Late Models. Featured will be the Championship races for the Mini Stock and Cruiser divisions, with Mini Stocks racing for $400-to-win and Cruisers competing for $300-to-win.
