SAS versus SUPR John L Cliett Tribute This Saturday Night!
O’Reilly Late Model Shootout $5,000 to Win August 5th!
Columbus, MS-The 7th Carl Hogan Automotive John L Cliett Tribute at Columbus Speedway on August 5th is set to be truly a historical racing event. The O’Reilly Southern All Stars will collide with the O’Reilly SUPR Series in their first ever co-sanctioned event as part of the $5,000 to win 59-lap O’Reilly Late Model Shootout. The John l Cliett Tribute has established itself as one of the more prestigious events in the region as the race celebrates the fond memories of the “59 racer;” otherwise known as “The One and Only” John L Cliett. The defending and 2 time John L Cliett Tribute champion is Mike Boland from Cuba, Alabama.
The unique race is expected to draw participants from as far west as Texas and as far as the Carolina’s from the east. The intersectional field of cars will offer fans a blend of drivers racing together that is very seldom seen and also provides what may be the only opportunity of the year for area fans to see some of the drivers that follow both the Southern All Star and SUPR tours.
As always, the touring drivers will have their hands full with the local competition and regional drivers at Columbus Speedway. Rick and Eddie Rickman of Columbus have been strong all season; as well as current points leader Shawn Edwards from Louisville, Mississippi. Ronny Lee Hollingsworth from Northport continues to make his presence known at Columbus Speedway as well as other possible area driver entrants including Dean Carpenter, Jamie Elam, Jerry Inmon, the Cliburns, Scott Dedwylder, Mark and Johnny Stokes, Roger Shirley, Bub McCool, Jason Smith, Justin McKree, and frequent visitor Jay Blair.
Mike Boland of Cuba, Alabama is having a banner year in 2006 and has visited Columbus Speedway Victory Lane twice this season and has three runner up finishes in major events this season as well including a second in the James King Memorial, a second in the Firecracker 40, and a second place finish in the recent Lucas Oil Series event.
The driver Boland has run second to on two occasions has quickly become a marked man at “The Baddest Bullring in the South.” That man is known as “The Intimigator” is Chris Wall from Holden, Louisiana. Wall, the current Mississippi State Championship Series point’s leader, has 4 wins on the season at Columbus Speedway alone including the Winter Classic, the James King Memorial, and the Lucas Oil Series sanctioned James Nickoles Memorial on July 15th.
Things should really get interesting when you add to the mix expected talented drivers such as Southern All Star point’s leader Chris “Smokey” Madden from Gray Court, South Carolina who has 9 special event wins in 2006 and is expected to return to action after an injury has held him out of the last couple of events and “The Tar Heel Tiger” Ray Cook from Brasstown, North Carolina who is on a 4 race winning streak. Mark Vineyard from Knoxville currently resides in 2nd place in the SAS points standings. Other possible entrants from the east include SAS points chasers and SAS Rookie of the Year leader Joe Armes, Bo Shirley, James Cline, and Georgia racers Aaron Ridley, Derrick Rainey, Jake Knowles, and others.
Add SUPR drivers and points leader David Ashley from Zachary, Louisiana who has been on fire this season with 5 SUPR wins in 2006, Kenny Merchant from Ruston Louisiana with 2 SUPR wins plus many more top drivers from across the entire south and it should be a very competitive field. Also of note, the race is a SUPR Gulf South event in addition to national points and Jason Ingalls of Longview, Texas currently leads the region followed by Ryan Plaisance of Westwego, Louisiana. Plus SUPR regular Rob Litton has shown himself to be exceptionally competitive in his visits to Columbus Speedway and Shreveport’s Ray Moore is always a tough competitor.
The big event paying $5,000 to win and $400 to start will consist of Super Late Model Group Pole Qualifying, Super Late Model Heat Races, B-Mains, and the 59-lap John L Cliett Tribute main event. The O’Reilly Late Model Shootout feature will be the first main event of the evening in the order of events.
Local Divisions in action include Open Wheel Modifieds, Late Model Stocks, Stormpay Late Models, Street Stocks, and Mini Stocks.
