Columbus, MS - Saturday night marked the return of the USCS Winged Outlaw Sprints to Columbus Speedway. The Premier Ford Columbus Clash brought 24 Sprinter teams to The Bullring on a night that also featured a Late Model Stock Championship event as well as racing in all local divisions including the Super Late Models. 111 race cars participated in the night's action.
As Mike Ford led early on in the USCS Outlaw Sprint feature, "The Texan" Gary Wright would work his way methodically to the front riding the rim of the track, actually racing high above the cushion in turns 3 & 4. Wright would reach second place by lap 16, then begin what turned into a lengthy side-by-side race with Ford for the lead. Wright finally wrestled the lead away with only 4 laps remaining and go on to win over Ford and Jerrod Hull.
The Commercial Dispatch Super Late Model main event would see 5 lead changes in 20 laps of wild action, with Eddie Rickman taking the initial lead only to lose the position to Jim McDuffie on lap 8. McDuffie's engine went up in a cloud of smoke on lap 13, giving the lead back to Rickman with Mike Boland on his heels. By lap 15, last-starting Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth got around Boland for second, then took the lead from Rickman as the field came around to take the white flag only to lose power in turn 2. Boland would get around Rickman to take the lead and go on to the win ahead of Rickman and the legendary Jerry Inmon.
Jason Sanderford grabbed the lead at the start of the Late Model Stock Championship event ahead of a 3-wide pack racing for second place. Billy Franklin would move around Phillip Dean , then close in on Jeremy Glasgow and Stacy Tyler and take over second place on lap 15. Sanderford would go on to take his second consecutive Bullring victory followed by Franklin and Tyler.
Lee Ray would take the win in Open Wheel Modified action, racing hard early on with Eddie Rickman until Rickman spun in turn 4. Chris Glenn would race right on Ray's bumper for much of the rest of the race as he held off a pack of cars racing for third place. Ray would take the checkers ahead of the side-by-side duo of Glenn and Matt Price.
The Stormpy.com Crate Late Models would also have a consecutive race winner as Caleb Myers took the win once again over Thomas McReynolds and Reed Long. Trey Bright would lead Marvin Beard and Danny Gable to the checkers in Street Stock action, and Allen Gilreath claimed the Mini Stock win over Jackie Pendley and Stanley Busbin. Wayne & Jamie Sudduth would take yet another Cruiser victory and Ben Williams continued his domination of his class with the Hot Shot division win.
Racing continues Saturday night at Columbus Speedway with another Weekly Racing Series event. The Crate Late Model class will not be running at The Bullring next weekend as there is a national Stormpay.com event elsewhere in the state, but all other local divisions will be in action including the Rebel Challenge Weekly Racing Series Super Late Models.
