Father and Son Victories at Fort Payne Motor Speedway!
The Season Opener kicked the 2010 season off with a bang when Chad Smith of Cedartown, GA won the Super Late Model feature event after watching his thirteen year old son, Austin Smith win his first ever race in the all but new Sportsman division at FPMS Saturday night.
It was a fast paced night that ended at ten o’clock with Chad Smith in victory lane celebrating not only for himself, but for rookie driver Austin Smith as well. Both father and son were very reserved and soft spoken as Chad just kept telling how proud he was about his boy winning and made a point to thank the fans for turning out to support the sport.
At the start of the Super Late Model feature it was Chad Smith on the pole after delivering the quick qualifying time of 14.207 just edging out Chris Beck of Cedar Bluff, AL who turned 14.222. Kyle May of Pisgah, AL started inside second row with Mario Gresham of Rome, GA outside him. When the green flag fell, Smith and May linked together and left the field early as Gresham worked on getting by the 2C car of Beck. The field was tightened up once again when early in the race one of the only cautions saw Sammy Brown of Fyffe, AL and Blake Smith of Rome, GA getting together in turn three and stopping on the top of the track. Both cars were done for the night and went to the pits.
After the cautions were over it was Smith and May at it once again with Smith getting the eventual advantage and checked out to a quarter track sized lead. The top five were Smith in first, May second, Beck third, Gresham fourth and Bryan Grider of Stevenson, AL put his number 39 machine in the fifth spot.
In the Crate Late Model feature it was Brady Burns of Piedmont, AL putting on the show and getting the victory over Lucas Burns of Attalla, AL after a late race pass off turn two. Brady had started inside front row but lost the lead on the first lap to outside pole setter Lucas Burns going into turn one. Kenny Brown of Fyffe, AL drove like a man on a mission as well only to end up in the third position at the end.
The Sportsman race was the highlight of the night with first time driver Austin Smith of Cedartown, GA getting the win after inheriting the lead when pole setter Daniel Johnson of Fort Payne, AL jumped the start and was moved back a row. Blake Hood of Gadsden, AL gave chase but fell short while trying to hold off a hard charging TJ Brittain of Centre, AL who came from the rear to finish second leaving Hood in the third spot. Destin Purvis of Rome, GA started and ended in fourth in his first ever race to round out the top four.
The A-Hobby race was a six lap shoot out between the 88J car, JR Atchley of Henegar, AL and Chad Stone’s 4 car from Section, AL. The race was as close as they come with Atchley getting the advantage early. Stone stayed close but patient and at lap three got his opportunity to make a pass. Atchley went into turn one a little fast and had to lock the breaks before shooting off turn two. By then it was too late because Stone had made away with the lead and held it to the end.
In the B-Hobby feature Wade Gidley of Sand Rock, AL put on the show by out running Danny Whitten of Gadsden, AL. Dan Dan tried working every angle possible to make the pass but came up short ending the race in the number two slot. Outside pole setter Phillip Arnold of Albertville, AL wound up third after a furious race with fourth place Patrick Scoggins of Oneonta, AL. Fifth went to Donald Daniels of Trenton, GA who was testing his set up in a new Ford Thunderbird.
Jeff Phillips of Scotsboro, AL won the pony race with room to spare after starting the fifteen lap feature from the eighth spot. Phillips made quick work of pole setter and second place finisher Lee Adams of Boaz, AL. Jimmy Plumlee of Trenton, GA finished third putting Jessie Wilbourn of Arab, AL in fourth and Brandon Wilbanks of Scotsboro, AL in fifth.
The next event at Fort Payne Motor Speedway will be Saturday May 8th and will have bicycle races for the kids and a full racing program with Spectator Racing at the end. The gates will open at 5pm and racing will begin at 7:30pm. Hope to see you there.
