Fort Payne, AL - When the fireworks were over the only sparks left flying were on the track at Fort Payne Motor Speedway. In qualifying it looked like Lee Sutton of Taylorsville, GA had his #10 Ladds Farm Supply, Sutton's Farms, Red Top Auto Auction car dialed in and working the best when he ran a 14.465 to set the pole for the July 4th Fire Cracker 40 Lap Feature event.
On the outside front row was the R1 car, Riley Hickman of Ooltewah, TN and the expectations were high for the start. Last week's feature winner Kyle May of Pisgah, AL had his Sun Loan Company #55 on the inside second row beside the #22 Bobby Mayse of Harrison, TN a past track champion from Cleveland, TN. On the third row was Bryan Pritchard of Harrison, TN just inside the sixth place starter and eventual winner Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA in his #10 Turner Excavating, Dirty White Boy Chasis.
The start of the feature was lit up by Tubby's Pit Stop fireworks and when the green flag fell it was Sutton who jumped out front with May hot on his heels. Behind the top two, the field was going three and four wide jockeying for position which inevitably led to a few cautions along the way and May was excused early after contact with Turner cut a tire. He had lost the second position to Hickman by that point and left only one competitor between Turner and Sutton.
Turner was handling very well through the turns while most others were tight and was able to get under Hickman coming off turn two and they ran three laps side by side until finally some lap traffic blocked the top groove of the track forcing Hickman to back off and move down.
Just before the half-way point in the race Robert Gant of Pisgah, AL and Bryan Pritchard made contact on the back straight and Gant stopped in turn three bringing out the caution flag, resetting and tightening the field once again. This opened the door for Turner to make his move.
Continuing to use the inside lane Turner chopped away the gap between himself and Sutton eventually taking the lead for himself. Sutton would fall back to the sixth place before the end of the feature. Hickman and tenth place qualifier Gar Dickson of Flintstone, GA linked up together to go to second and third putting Mayse in fourth and Chris Beck of Cedar Bluff, AL in fifth.
"This is an awesome feeling winning from back in the pack with a crate motor. These guys are tough competitors and it definitely wasn't easy," Turner said after the race. "I want to thank Mon and Dad and Turner Excavating and all the people who help with the car. I couldn't have done it without them."
In the A-Hobby race it was Booger Brooks of Chattanooga, TN who claimed his third victory of the year at Fort Payne Motor Speedway. Brooks started on the outside pole next to Lewis Rakestraw of Boaz, AL and on the initial start he got ahead on the front straight but the caution came out and ended that run. On the next start Rakestraw got ahead and was again called back because of the caution flag, but on the third start it was on. Side by side for two laps and Rakestraw who was running the bottom groove got the lead. Brooks wasn't going to settle for second though so he went to the bottom as well and kept sticking his nose piece under Rakestraw until finally he was able to get by.
Chad Stone of Section, AL placed third with Lance Bracewell of Rome, GA in fourth putting Scottie Hogan of Harrison, TN in fifth.
In other action Eric Hamby of Rome, GA won the B-Hobby feature putting Patrick Scoggins of Oneonta, AL in the second slot and Mike Bradford of Stevenson, AL in third. The Pony race was dominated by Jerry Black of Blountsville, AL with Jimmy Plumlee of Trenton, GA and Josh Battles of Birmingham, AL ran third.
