Fort Payne, AL - All eyes were on Kyle May of Pisgah, AL Saturday night. Some expecting but all wanting a new track record setting performance from the eighteen year old hot shot turned local hero. And while he was unable to deliver on the record he did set the quick time with a lightning fast 14.368 lap placing him just ahead of Robert Stutts of Murphreesboro, TN.
This was the first time the two would meet at Fort Payne Motor Speedway this year and they put on an awesome show with the help of Mr. Robert Gant of Pisgah, AL. Stutts and Gant fighting side by side for most of the race and May only getting away at the end.
"Winning four races sure feels good. I was waiting on Stutts to come from nowhere but the plan was to make the car as wide as possible and I guess it worked," May said after the race. "I want to thank my Mom and Dad as always because with out them I couldn't do this and Kevin Hale for the motor I run and the Suntrust Loan Department."
When asked how confident he is about the $3000.00 race on the 4th of July he responded, "Well, hopefully I will carry some momentum from these wins into that race but I can't get too cocky because when you think you can't be beat, that's when it happens. Maybe outrunning some of the bigger names will help to get my name out there for bigger and better things."
Mario Gresham of Rome, GA was also in house for his first start, and best finish, fourth, since nearly totaling his ride a few weeks ago. Since moving up from A-Hobby Gresham has been almost constantly improving his program in his presently unsponcered X car. Daniel Johnson of Fort Payne, AL rounded out the top five as the last car not a lap down.
In the Crate Late Model division it was Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA who put his Turner Excavating number ten car in the top spot for the first time at Fort Payne Motor Speedway. Turner had had some problems with his car earlier in the week but got it all settled about one hour before qualifying the pole position to start the feature.
Finishing second was the preacher Kenny Brown of Fyffe, AL who has also improved greatly over this season. In the third spot was Jeremy Pruitt of Chattanooga, TN and in fourth was Kasey Hall of Geraldine, AL. The fifth spot went to Jarod Greene of Rome, GA who started on the outside front row but was unable to continue to the finish.
Shane Dutton of Sand Rock, AL got the win in the Sportsman class just barely edging out Brady Burns of Piedmont, AL. Dustin Hendrix of Dawsonville, GA finished third and rounded out the participants in this brand new class at Fort Payne Motor Speedway.
In the A-Hobby race Lewis Rakestraw of Boaz, AL came in like a lion to steal the show from Jeff Chumley of Gadsden, AL. Rakestraw had motor problems earlier and missed a few shows, however he didn't miss a step on his return holding second place finisher Booger Brooks of Chattanooga, TN at bay and putting Chumley in third. Chad Stone of Section, AL got fourth place to cap off his birthday run in the four car. Fifth went to Matthew Coffman of Stevenson, AL.
Danny Whitton of Gadsden, AL won the B-Hobby race putting Bill Pate of Hammondsville, AL in the number two spot. Third went to Ronnie Brooks of Chattanooga, TN with Philip Arnold of Albertville, AL in fourth and Mathew Owens of Aragon, GA in fifth.
The Pony race was dominated by Marty Gass of Trenton, GA. Jimmy Plumlee of Trenton, GA came in second with Brandon Wilbanks of Scottsboro, AL finishing third. Rounding out the top five was Donald Daniels in fourth and James Wells in fifth.
The Spectator race was a ton of fun with three entrants. A Ford Explorer that had already been rolled over and no windshield, an almost brand new 2008 Mitsubishi Gallant and an old Mitsubishi station wagon. By the end it was the station wagon winning the event but the Gallant had torn up its left front fender and door, had a flat and a busted radiator.
The next event at Fort Payne Motor Speedway will be on July 4th and will feature our $3000.00 to win Fire Cracker 40 Lap Super Late Model event plus a full racing program for Spotsmans, A-Hobbys, B-Hobbys, Ponys and Spectator racing. We will have a large fireworks show and a flag presentation done by Boy Scout Troop #4. The gates will open at 5:00 pm and racing action is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
