CULPEPPER STOPS STEVIE JONES WIN STREAK AT COCHRAN
By: Rev. Todd Shearin
Seventeen late model drivers were on hand Saturday night at Cochran speedway. With $2000 going to the winner plus an additional $300 in bonus money for anyone who could beat Stevie Jones drivers and crews put forth their best effort to win the lucrative prize. Ricky Culpepper bested a stellar field by taking the pole and going on to lead every lap. Culpepper started alongside of JR Moseley and just ahead of Jones who started from the third spot. The first double file start saw Moseley jump out to the early advantage but it was for naught as the caution fell for a five car incident on lap one that sidelined Jimmy Sharpe, and Skeeter Redmon. On the second start it was Culpepper that led the pack into turn one and that is where he would stay for the remainder of the race. Jones was able to get by Moseley early on and started his pursuit of his seventh consecutive win. Further back Moseley was fading as a result of a tire going down which eventually sent him to the pits for repairs. Culpepper never wavered as the laps went by and Jones was never really able to mount a serious challenge. Jordy Nipper ran a strong third and Brad Comer came home fourth. I had the chance to interview Culpepper on the front stretch after his win and I will say that he and his team were both excited and humble in their post race comments. Culpepper was quick to honor Jones’ incredible win streak and counts this win as one of his biggest yet. Stevie will win many more races and he put on an incredible charge but is was not meant to be. Ricky we congratulate you on your win and for being a class act! Veteran Donald Sanders was the class of the field in sportsman action and took a commanding lead early on his way to the win. Sanders was the pole sitter and pretty much drove away from the field. Brad Comer, Josh Odom, and Don Mullis raced hard the entire race often swapping positions before they would finally finish in that order. Scooter Smith won the pure stock feature in a photo finish. Smith started on the pole and was challenged hard every lap by Bobby Piper. The top spot was contested on every lap to the delight of the fans and was literally taken by inches by Smith at the stripe. Clay Howell would finish third. This was one of the best finishes ever and we were all on our feet cheering these two drivers. Nice job Scooter and Bobby on an awesome race and finish. In cadet action Dustin Miller held off a hard charging Jason Floyd to take the win. Tony Head was also in the hunt for the whole race. Floyd who is known for running the high side gave Miller all he could stand but just could not make the pass. Jason Lyles had a good run finishing fourth after starting at the tail of the field. The road warrior feature was won by Wil Herrington after a spirited battle with TJ Woodard. Herrington and Corey Dunn raced each other hard in the early laps with Woodard lurking just a car length back in third. Dunn was making a run on Herrington when he drove in a little too deep and spun in turn four. This would set the stage for a fender banging battle between Woodard and Herrington which almost resulted in multiple spins. Several times contact was made and both drivers did not give an inch. Herrington would go on to win and tempers flared in the tech area afterwards but order was quickly restored. Mark your calendars for June 27th which will be another $2000 to win late model race. Thanks to all of our loyal fans, racers, and sponsors we appreciate your support. I would also like to send out a get well soon to long time track announcer Travis STONE COLD Sanders. We really missed you this week and hope to see you soon! Also let’s continue to hold up Harry Rowland and Dennis Miller in our prayers as they deal with health issues at this time. Come and join us next weekend for more great racing action! God bless you all.
