Cleveland, TN - Utilizing a low side charge, Crossville Tennessee’s Randy Weaver overtook race-long leader Ricky Arms near the halfway point to capture the 32nd Annual Coca-Cola Tennessee Memorial at Cleveland Speedway. Weaver’s second 2009 Southern All Stars win was worth a cool $5000 and moved him up to fourth in the championship chase one hundred sixteen points in arrears of new point leader Ronny Lee Hollingsworth.
Arms led the twenty-nine drivers in Sunoco Race Fuels Race for the Pole Qualifying with a lap of 14.197 seconds for an average of 76.07 MPH. Todd Morrow of East Ridge, Tennessee timed in second quick with a lap of 14.240 seconds. Skip Arp, Weaver and Derek Ellis rounded out the top five qualifiers. Sixth through tenth were: Kevin Gibson, Lamar Scoggins, Shawn Chastain, Randle Chupp and Kayne Hickman.
Hoosier Race Tires Last Chance Heat Race action saw Jake Knowles capture a win in the first heat. Billy Mayo charged his way forward to take second in the heat with Joe Armes, David Payne, David McCoy and Rodney Weeks taking transfer spots. The second heat fell to Johnny Chastain ahead of Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, Mark Vineyard, Gabe Wilson, Mike Hill and Chuck Proctor. Southern All Star provisional starters were Ethan Hunter and Brad Coffey. With wet weather looming in the region and a shower having already fallen, officials opted to move the Southern All Stars feature up in the program. The green flag waved on the fifty lap feature at 9:38 PM with Arms launching to the lead. Morrow battled back on the highside and rode door to door with Arms over the next three laps with Arp and Weaver both looking for an opening.
Weaver worked the absolute bottom groove while Arp and Morrow rode the middle. Only the leader, Arms, clung to the outside wall using the topside. Weaver moved by Arp on the fifth lap and immediately began to challenge Morrow. Morrow moved up to the top to try to hold off Weaver’s advances but Weaver’s machine was just too good on the bottom. Weaver took the spot two circuits later. Weaver then set his sights on Arms who had already entered heavy lap traffic. As Arms tried to negotiate the lappers he reached a pair battling door to door. The delay allowed Weaver and Morrow to close right up to his rear deck. On more than one occasion over the next two laps the lead trio stacked up three wide for the point. However Arms was able to negotiate by the traffic to retain the lead. But Weaver was relentless on the bottom.
Just before the races halfway point Weaver was able to overtake Arms for the lead. At that point Weaver put his GRT mount on cruise control and worked the lap traffic to perfection for the next sixteen laps building a full straightaway lead. Weaver’s huge lead was erased when Jake Knowles and Randle Chupp made contact on the front straightaway bringing Knowles machine to a stop entering turn one. On the restart Weaver once again moved away from the pack while Arms and Arp battled for second. Arms was able to cover the position with Arp falling in line in third. But behind the front three an all out war was being waged for fourth. Todd Morrow found himself under serious fire from Billy Mayo and Kevin Gibson when they made it three wide for the position. Mayo was finally able to take the position as the field took the ten to go indication.
Mayo was a man on the move as he continued to work the bottom of the race track. Mayo, however, ran out of time just as he caught up to Arp the leader took the white flag. Weaver easily cruised to the win with Arms holding on for second. Arp quelled the late race rally of Mayo to finish third to Mayo’s fourth. Morrow held off Gibson to take the fifth spot. “Man we just had a great race car. I knew when we went green we had a car that was capable of winning. I just had to bide my time and get through the traffic to get a good run on Ricky. Hats off to him too he had a great run. And I appreciate all the effort that these guys put forth to get the show in.” Weaver said from Victory Lane.
Race Notes: Weaver’s GRT Race Car is powered by Race Engine Design and is sponsored by Glenn’s Auto Parts, Byrd’s Radiator, PPM Racing Products, Jerr-Dan, Fastlane Signs & Graphics, Hoosier Race Tires and VP Race Fuels. The win was Weaver’s ninth career Southern All Stars victory. Weaver was driving with a broken index finger which he suffered in competition on Friday night at Boyds Speedway. Hometown racer Billy Mayo garnered PPM Racing Products Hard Charger honors for his thirteen to fourth place run. Eight of the top ten finishers hailed from the Volunteer State.
