Fort Payne, AL - Two weeks ago Kyle May of Pisgah, AL set a new track record by running a 14.506 in qualifying. Last week, Chad Smith of Cedartown, GA leap-frogged that time when he turned a 14.503. Now this week May finds himself blowing away the competition and setting an even lower time, shaving almost half a second, with a 14.184.
"Next week I will probably do better," May said after his qualifying run. "I had something wrong with my carburetor so the car stumbled a little off the turns. But the track has plenty of grip and I couldn't ask for a better handling car."
During the feature May had Mr Marty May of Pisgah, AL (Kyle's Dad) and Robert Gant, of Pisgah, AL to contend with. Gant was sent to the rear of the field when he dove a little too low off turn three and spun into the in field. This left Kyle and Marty May up front with outside pole qualifier, and first time rookie at the mountain, Chris Beck of Cedar Bluff, AL all out battling for the lead. Beck would go on to fall out of the race when contact in turn one broke his tie-rod end.
Then it happened, Gant, the man who had been sent to the rear only a few laps ago was back in contention and fighting tooth and nail trying to claw the third position away from Mario Gresham of Rome, GA. After getting by Gresham on the bottom he was hunting for Marty.
He found Marty may still trying to beat Kyle out for The Lead unsuccessfully and after a few attempts at passing on the low side, he moved up, got around and started reeling in the race leader Kyle May.
Gant was running as high as he could get through the turns and May was using the middle groove to speed around and while Gant put out a valiant effort to win, it was Kyle May who wound up carrying the checkers around for the victory lap.
"I just want to thank everybody, especially my Mom and Dad because without them I wouldn't even be here," May said after the race. "I will be turning 18 this end of the week and would like to dedicate this win to my Mom. She's probably the one who taught me to drive anyhow."
The final line up was Kyle May first, Robert Gant second, Marty May third, Mario Gresham fourth, and Daniel Johnson rounded out the top five.
After the race Marty May (the happy pappy) said,"I am very proud of him. Maybe if he keeps this up he'll be somebody one day." And when asked if he had thought of blocking for his son he said,"Shoot no! I was trying to beat him myself. I didn't have time to even think about blocking!"
In the Crate race it was Tom Maddox of Centre, AL who ended up being the top dog. He and Aaron Ridley of Chatsworth, GA ran off early as third and fourth place competitors Lucas Burns of Attalla, AL and Kenny Brown of Fyffe, AL paired up to run for the third spot. The fifth place finisher was Ron Bozarth of Gurly, AL who was a few laps down.
The Sportsman division race was cut to ten laps for only having three competitors start the feature but they didn't let that stop them from putting on a great race. You could have thrown a blanket over all three of them for nearly the entire race. It ended with Dustin Hendricks of Dawsonville, GA getting the checkers, Sammy Brown of Fyffe, AL in second and Brady Burns of Piedmont, AL in third.
In other action, it was Jeff Chumlee of Gadsden, AL pulling out a narrow victory over Corey Cresswell of Chattanooga, TN who came from the last starting position to finish second. The third slot belonged to Matthew Coffman of Stevenson, AL who barely edged out Scottie Anderson of Trion, GA, the fourth place finisher. Bobby Tarlton of Talapoosa, GA came in fifth.
In the B-Hobby feature it was Danny Whitton of Gadsden, ALwho emerged victorious beating Bill Pate of Hammondsville, AL to the finish. Wade Gidley of Sandrock, AL ended his night in third with Matthew Owen of Aragon, GA coming from the seventh starting position to finish fourth. Patrick Scoggin of Oneonta, AL rounded out the top five.
The Pony feature saw seventeen drivers start and they ran their fifteen lap race with only one caution. Jerry Black of Blountsville, AL started in the fifteenth starting position and went on to lap the entire field and was another half a lap ahead of second place finisher Jimmy Plumlee of Trenton, GA. Third went to Lee Adams of Boaz, AL. Fourth belonged to Jeff Philips of Scottsboro, AL and in fifth was Chris Hipp of Rainsville, AL.
