FORT PAYNE, AL - Only one week after Kyle May of Pisgah, AL grabbed the track record from Blake Stewart of Dallas, GA, turning a blistering 14.505 in qualifying, Chad Smith of Cedartown, GA steps up and runs a 14.503 to become the new quick time record holder and pole setter for the Super Limited Late Model Feature.
The race was furious up front as Smith, May, and Gar Dickson of Flintstone, GA battled for the lead and at one point Smith was in the middle groove, May was on his bumper up high with Dickson on the bottom when they came up on the lap traffic. Smith made contact and the lap car spun to the bottom where Dickson had no place to go and he was forced to ramp up and off the car's left rear tire so hard it looked like he was riding a wheely in his late model that lasted at least fifty yards down the front straight away.
Smith went on to win the Super Limited Late Model feature with Dickson in Second and May wound up third. "I wasn't real happy about the way I drove the car tonight, but it's a win, first win of 2009, so I'll take it," Smith said after the race. "I want to thank Jody, Joe and Deborah Summerville, all the folks at Rudy Woods, Johny Will who helped me with the car and my family."
Jason Morris of Glencoe, AL and Brandon Roberts of Oxford, AL rounded out the top five gaining two positions each from their original starting position.
In the Crate Late Model feature it was Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA who finally dethroned Mr Jody Summerville of Rome, GA. Brindle was on a mission when he showed up by qualifying just in front of Summerville taking the pole to start the race. While Summerville seemed to be as fast and handle as well as he always does it was Brindle who dazzled the fans in the caution free event by getting a quarter track advantage before the checkers fell.
Philip Anderson of Calhoun, GA finished third with Kasey Hall of Geraldine, AL nipping at his heels in fourth. Curtis Cline of Douglasville, GA came in fifth.
The new Sportsman Class had four competitors start and a lot of action up front. Dustin Hendrix of Dawsonville, GA sat on the pole with Shane Dutton on the outside front row. Brady Burns of Piedmont, AL and Haley Pitts of Lineville, AL made up row two. When the green flag fell Dutton didn't give an inch going into turn one so he and Hendrix raced side by side down the back straight neither competitor willing to concede the position. This went on for two laps when Hendrix got a little loose and bobbled the lead off to Dutton. After lap three it was two groups of two as Burns and Pitts were racing furiously for the third spot.
The feature ended with Dutton up front, Hendrix in second, Burns in third and Pitts in the fourth spot.
In other action, the A-Hobby feature was won by Buger Brooks of Chattanooga, TN who came from eighth to put his #148 machine in victory lane. Pole setter Corey Creswell also of Chattanooga, TN finished second with Tracy Wilder of Boaz, AL in third. Jeff Chumbley of Gadsden, AL and Kenny Taylor of Woodstock, GA rounded out the top five.
The B-Hobby race had Ronnie Brooks of Chattanooga, TN winning from his sixth place starting position on his first ever visit to Fort Payne Motor Speedway. Matthew Owens of Aragon, GA finished second with Jimmy Plumlee of Trenton, GA in third. Ronnie Smith of Coats Bend, AL got fourth and Logan Howell of Gadsden, AL came in fifth.
In the Pony feature, the top five were Jerry Black of Blountsville, AL, Brandon Wilbanks of Scottsboro, AL, Billy Cagle of Hazelgreen, AL, Michael Plumlee of Trenton, GA and Caylas Daniels also of Trenton, GA.
The next event at Fort Payne Motor Speedway will be Saturday June 6th and will feature a full racing program for all classes plus bycicle races for the kids. Gates will open at 5:00pm and racing action is scheduled for 7:30pm. For more information call 256-623-RACE or visit the track web site at FortPayneMotorSpeedway.com.
