KYLE MAY SHATTERS THE QUICK TIME RECORD ON
FRESH CLAY SATURDAY NIGHT!
FORT PAYNE, AL - With emminant rain looming on the horizon, seventeen Super-Limited Late Models, ten Crate Late Models, three Sportsmans, eleven A-Hobbys, seven B-Hobbys, and twelve Ponys prepaired for competition on what would end up being a doomed event at Fort Payne Motor Speedway Saturday night. But the night would not be wasted by many of the drivers as many would go out and try to have the best qualifying time, three of which went on to beat the old track record of 14.630 held by Blake Stewart of Centre, AL.
First to qualify was the Crate Late Models and while a lot of the guys were very competitive, it was Mattew Turner of Dawsonville, GA and Jody Summerville of Rome, GA who shot holes in Stewart's time. It was Turner's 29th birthday, so to celebrate he set a new record by qualifying a 14.545 in his two lap effort. A few cars later it was Jody Summerville's turn and while he did beat Stewart's best by running a 14.624 he couldn't topple the birthday boy's time to become the record holder.
The excitement happened to be shortlived however, because when the Super-Limited Late Models rolled onto the track Kyle May of Pisgah, AL threw caution to the wind and turned a 14.505. May, who is scheduled to graduate from Pisgah High School this Tuesday got his first ever win at Fort Payne Motor Speedway earlier this year and is now officially the fastest driver at the three eighths mile track.
Not long after May completed his lightning fast pole run the bottom fell out and shortly thereafter the races were called for rain. But not before the Sportsman class and B-Hobbys got their feature in.
In the Sportsman race three cars duked it out for the lead until third place finisher Wormy Walker of Boaz, AL did a 360 coming off turn two and wound up going a lap down. This allowed Brady Burns of Piedmont, AL all the room he needed to secure the lead and with the pole setter Dustin Hendrix of Dawsonville, GA in tow went on to win one of the night's two features.
Winning the B-Hobby feature was the seven car driven by Philip Arnold of Boaz, AL which was Arnold's first victory in the car he bought from Lewis Rakestraw. Arnold thanked a lot of folks for helping him get to victory lane and concluded his interview by saying, "I guess I just want to thank everybody!"
Bill Pate of Hammondsville, AL finished second after being sent to the rear for aggresive driving. In third was Wade Gidley of Sand Rock, AL. Fourth was Matthew Owens of Aragon, GA and rounding out the top five was Jess Washington of Albertville, AL.
The next event at Fort Payne Motor Speedway will be Saturday, May 30th and will feature a full racing program. The gates will open at 5:00pm and racing action is scheduled for 7:00pm. For more information call (256) 623-7223 or visit the track web sight at www.fortpaynemotorspeedway.com.
