FORT PAYNE, AL – Kasey Hall of Geraldine, AL was the winner of the 25-lap Super Late Model feature race on Saturday night at Fort Payne Motor Speedway, taking the checkered flag in his Hall Racing machine sideways after tangling with Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA in the Summerville Junkyard entry in a wild finish.
A green-white-checkered restart saw Fields challenge Hall for the lead on the inside on lap 24, but on lap 25, Fields went to the outside in turn two, and got a run on Hall down the backstretch. Hall and Fields raced side-by-side through turns three and four, but they got together on the front straightaway coming down for the checkered flag.
Fields bounced off the wall before the finish line and made contact with Hall, turning him sideways. Hall took the checkered flag with the nose of his race car facing the grandstand. Tony Brown of Fort Payne, AL was able to get underneath Fields at the finish line to take second, and Fields finished third, sliding backwards across the finish line.
Marty May of Pisgah, AL took the fourth spot, and Kyle May of Pisgah, AL finished fifth. Chad Stone of Section, AL grabbed the sixth position, and Avery Pruitt of Gadsden, AL was seventh. Kenny Brown of Fyffe, AL finished eighth, with Teddy Snow of Rockford, AL taking the ninth spot. Early race leader Robert Stutts of Murfreesboro, TN rounded out the top ten.
Stutts was the fast qualifier with a lap around the 3/8-mile clay oval in 14.777 seconds, and started the race from the pole position in search of his fourth straight win at Fort Payne Motor Speedway. Stutts took the lead at the start of the race followed by Fields, Hall, Stone, and Marty May.
Hall was able to pass Fields for the second spot on lap four, and Brown passed Marty May for the fourth spot on lap 11. The first of three caution flags came out on lap 14 when Stone spun in turn four. Stutts led Hall, Fields, Brown, Kyle May, Marty May, and Stone down for the restart. Marty May was able to pass Kyle May for the fifth spot on the restart.
Stutts drove into heavy lapped traffic on lap 20, and Hall was able to close to within two car lengths of the leader. On lap 24 Stutts tangled with the lapped car of Bryan Grider of Bridgeport, AL. Stutts and Grider spun off the backstretch and collected Hall. The caution was called on Grider, Stutts was force to the pits, and Hall was able to continue as the leader for the restart.
That set up the two lap restart, and the fireworks that ensued coming down for the checkered flag that closed the 2008 season at Fort Payne Motor Speedway with a bang, and left the fans with something to remember during the off-season.
In other action, second-generation driver Lucas Burns of Attalla, AL took his first-ever win in his first season of racing in the 20-lap NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model feature race. Fields, who did double-duty on Saturday night finished second with Jimmy Kay of Taylorsville, GA, Shane Dutton of Collinsville, AL, and Jarrod Greene of Rome, GA rounding out the top five.
Greg Thompson of Pisgah, AL won the 12-lap A Hobby Stock feature race followed by Crawford Watkins of Bryant, AL, and Matthew Coffman of Stevenson, AL. Stanley Grego of Springville, AL won the 15-lap B Hobby Stock feature race, with Jason Roberts of Rome, GA, and Harold Lang of Albertville, AL rounding out the top three.
Jeff Phillips of Scottsboro, AL outran Donald Daniels of Trenton, GA and Brandon Wilbanks of Scottsboro, AL for the win in the 12-lap Pony Stock feature race.
Saturday night’s race was the final night of 2008 racing season at Fort Payne Motor Speedway. Plans for the 2009 season will be announced in the coming days on the track web site at www.fortpaynemotorspeedway.com.
