FORT PAYNE, AL – Gar Dickson of Flintstone, GA drove his Ford to victory in the 25-lap Super Late Model feature race on Saturday night at Fort Payne Motor Speedway. Dickson passed early race leader Robert Gant of Flat Rock, AL on lap eight and then pulled away for his first win of the season on the 3/8-mile clay oval.
Hobby Stock graduate Kyle May of Pisgah, AL turned in his best Super Late Model performance of the season to finish second after racing side-by-side with Gant for most of the second half of the race. Gant, who started on the pole position after setting fast time at 14.944 seconds, had to settle for third.
Tubby Nunn of Boaz, AL finished fourth, and Tony Brown of Fort Payne, AL took the fifth spot. Kenny Hall of Geraldine, AL was sixth, and Marty May of Fort Payne, AL drove to the seventh spot. Bryan Grider of Bridgeport, AL finished eighth, Chad Stone of Section, AL was ninth, and Darrell Hayes of Ider, AL rounded out the top ten.
Gant took the lead at the start of the race followed by Dickson, Kyle May, Nunn, and Brown. Gant moved from the bottom groove to the middle groove by the third lap, and Dickson planted his machine in the bottom groove. Dickson chipped away at Gant’s lead, and made what would be the winning pass on lap eight coming off the second turn.
Gant got caught up in the first of two caution flags on lap 10 when the lapped car of Teddy Snow spun in turn two. Gant had to lock it down and spin to keep from hitting Snow. The caution was charged to Snow, and Gant restarted in the second spot behind Dickson. Following the top two to the green flag were Kyle May, Nunn, Brown, Mike Bruner, Hall, Grider, Marty May, and Stone.
Marty May charged up to the seventh spot on the restart, as Hall began to drop back through the field. Kyle May got up on the wheel and began to challenge Gant for the second spot on lap 13 using the inside groove. May nosed in front of Gant on lap 14, and the caution flag came out on lap 15 when Bruner spun in turn four.
With Dickson in front for the restart, Kyle May chose the inside for the double-file restart. When the field went green, Gant drove back around Kyle to reclaim the second spot. The pair of Kyle May and Gant raced side-by-side for the second spot for the next five laps before Kyle May put Gant behind him on lap 20.
Dickson pulled away in the last ten laps of the race while Kyle May and Gant battled wheel-to-wheel for the second spot.
Jason Hiett of Lincoln, AL drove the N&N Motors GRT to his second win of the season at Fort Payne Motor Speedway in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model Division. Blake Stewart of Centre, AL, Kasey Hall of Geraldine, AL, Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA, and Denny Slayton of Rossville, GA rounded out the top five.
