Capactiy Crowd Cheers Smith to Victory
Gastonia, NC (July 25) - A standing room only crowd watched Dallas, NC's Jeff Smith streak to his first checkered flag of the season Friday night at Carolina Speedway in Round 2 of the Super Late Model Shootout. For Smith the win was worth $2,200.
Greensboro NC's Steve Blackburn and Dan Breuer shared the front row for the start of the main event. Blackburn driving the K&L Rumley Enterprises entry jumped out to the early lead as Smith darted inside Breuer in turn two to grab second. Smith then went to work on Blackburn until he slid by exiting turn two on lap seven. Breuer followed suit a three laps later and began to challenge Smith for the race lead. The third generation racer driving the Starrette Trucking/Norton Stereo/Rocket chassis was too strong as he held off Breuer over the final stages of the 25 lap affair to claim the win. Breuer, seventh starting Tim Allen, Blackburn and G.R. Smith rounded out the top five. Sixth through tenth went to Johnny Pursley, John Pursley, Chris Ferguson, Brandon Ifft and Billy Thompson.
In the fan favorite Street Stock Division it was Scott Freeman earning his first career victory. He took the lead late in the event when Ben Watkins experienced engine problems. Jerry Oliver was second with Mike Messer third, Jamie McCombs fourth and Roddey Bolin fifth.
John Pursley went flag to flag to claim his second consecutive GM Performance Late Model win. Greg Barker, points leader Pat Lindsey, Scott Gordon and Billy Thompson rounded out the top five.
The Open Wheel Modifieds made their second visit of 2008 to Carolina Speedway and it was once again Rob McLaughlin standing in City Chevrolet Victory Lane when the dust settled. Jamie Kuntz ran a strong second with Nick Hoffman, who was making his Carolina Speedway debut, third, Greg Brown fourth and Richard Clew fifth.
Darren Jones scored a very popular Renegade victory. He won over Chris Stowe, Ronald Pope, Jeremy Jackson and Chris Steele.
'Flyin' Brian Neufer padded his Pure Stock Four points lead by scoring the victory. Adam Vandiver, Jonathan Petrea, Wayne Curtis and Ashley Harding completed the top five.
Next week 'The Action Track' will be back with another full racing program. Gates open at 5:00 PM with racing at 8:00 PM. For more information visit www.carolinaspeedway.net
