Green Valley Speedway, Glencoe, Alabama Green Valley Speedway had their regular season opener Saturday night and what a nostalgic evening it was. The car count was awesome and the action was breath taking. The evening turned out to be very pleasant as the “cold weather “that was predicted by the weather folks never materialized. Many fans that came were pleased by the outstanding show that they saw, as the night moved along quickly and was very well organized. Comments were overheard how nice it was to have such a fine facility this close to Gadsden and anyone who doesn’t come to Green Valley is certainly missing one of the true local treasures with a history that dates back to the 1950’s and yet has been recently remodeled to become the most modern dirt track in State of Alabama, if not the entire South. Adding to the excitement Green Valley introduced to the crowd the new voice of the Valley J.J. Stevens who can be heard mornings on Z93.1 here in Gadsden along with “Mr. & Mrs. Top Gun” the track clown and his wife, for further entertainment in the Family oriented atmosphere here at Green Valley. The evening’s events all started with the National Vintage Association Race Car who entertained the fans with their old time race cars from the 1930’s through the 1960’s. These folks came from all over the South to entertain at Green Valley and certainly did not disappoint. It made many folks dream of years gone by and brought back memories of their early racing experiences, both as drivers and fans alike. After the NVRA Vintage Cars, it was time for the cars and drivers that you will see through out the season at the Valley. In the Super Late Model class Tony “The Tiger “Morris from Murfreesboro, Tn. was the leader for a good portion of the race and was being chased and finally passed by a local favorite Robert Gant, whom many assumed at that point would win the race. However, that was not to be, as furious late charge and side by side racing by T. J. Alford proved to gain him the victory with the last second passage of Robert Gant. “Top Gun” to be Alford finished 1st followed by Gant and in third was Tony Morris. In other action the Limited Late Models had Joe Noojin 1st followed by Steve Vann, 2nd and Lewis Rakestraw of Albertville, Al. third. In the Crate Late Model’s Clay Grogan of Southside, Al. was 1st, Lamar Haygood 2nd and Don Farmer 3rd. In the Super Street class Michael Jones of Rome, Ga. won with Bart “Super Star” Starr of Hokes Bluff a close second and David Beam finished third. In the Modified Pony division there was a bit of controversy as second place finisher Terry Gant protested the winner Brian Dodgen’s first place finish. After a through inspection by the Technical folks at Green Valley, it was ruled that Dodgen had indeed been legal and he was awarded the win, with Gant remaining second and Jimmy Plumlee rounding out the top three. This coming Saturday the Rebel Challenge Series will have a Super Late Model match with a FasTrak Crate Late Model feature and all the other classes that will run this season. With all that is planned at the Valley this year it is no wonder that many folks feel “The Thunder is truly back at Alabama’s premiere dirt track, Green Valley Speedway.”
