Race Summary for June 9th
Ronnie Johnson Wins Governor’s Cup Title
Columbus, MS-the 4th Annual Coca Cola Governor’s Cup at Magnolia Motor Speedway would see a loaded pit area with 115 race teams on hand to do battle on one of the biggest events of the season. There was also a big crowd on hand to watch the action, along with dignitaries, festivities, and a plethora of peripheral activities on going, only adding to the on-track excitement.
The main event of the evening was the 60-lap $5,000 to win Governor’s Cup Super Late Model main event. An excellent field of the 33 race teams signed in for the night’s action. There is an old saying that “the third time is a charm,” and for Ronnie Johnson that axiom turned out to be true. The evening marked Johnson’s third trip to Magnolia Motor Speedway and all went very well for the famed East Tennessee driver.
The program got underway with Super Late Model Pole Qualifying and Chattanooga, Tennessee’s Ronnie Johnson made the quickest elapsed time of the evening to earn Pole honors for the race. The 60-lap feature event would see much drama as Johnson jumped out to an early lead only to see Jason Cliburn step up to the middle of the race track and make the move to take the lead. Cliburn and Johnson would then have a two car battle for the lead for much of the remainder of the event with Johnson retaking the lead in the latter stages.
Not to be outdone, ‘Dr Dirt” Johnny Stokes methodically marched his way to the front of the pack from his tenth starting position running the dead bottom portion of the speedway to the front of the leader board. The final 10 laps of the event were very exciting with a three car battle for the lead. Johnson, Cliburn, and Stokes were nose to tail and Stokes cleared Cliburn for second as the leaders negotiated lapped traffic. The final few laps would see Johnson guarding the inside line with Stokes running with his nose on Johnson’s rear bumper.
The checkers would fly with Johnson taking the huge Governor’s Cup win as the top three cars contended for the win. Johnson added another prestigious title to his resume which already included 2 Dirt Track World Championships, multi Southern All Star Championships, hundreds of wins for the popular driver known as the “Chattanooga Flash.” Stokes would continue his competitive ways once again running his GM Performance Crate Engine to finish second, and Jason Cliburn of Star, Mississippi would complete the top three in his most impressive run to date at the “Black Ice” of the Magnolia Motor Speedway. Completing the top five with strong performances were Northport’s Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth and Kosciusko’s Anthony Rushing.
4th Annual Governor’s Cup finish:
1) Ronnie Johnson 2) Johnny Stokes 3) Jason Cliburn 4) Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth 5) Anthony Rushing 6) Mike Boland 7) Scott Dedwylder 8) Dane Dacus 9) Darin Dorsey 10) Scott Slay 11) Jimbo McDuffie 12) James Ward 13) Doug Todd 14) Charlie Gardner 15) Tim Knight 16) Roger Shirley 17) Shawn Edwards 18) Bub McCool 19) Keith Flurry 20) Jamie Elam 21) Chris Wall 22) Jeremy Glasgow 23) Justin McCree 24) Stacy Caldwell
The Stormpay Late Model event may have been somewhat caution plagued but it was not short on excitement when the green flag was flying. Jamie Pickard of Columbus would take the win in his GM Performance 602 after starting 15th in the 19 car field. Pickard worked the high side to perfection to take the win followed by strong performances by Darrell Guess and Moundville, Alabama’s Terry Kelley. The Late Model Stocks would see New Hope’s TK King take a dominating win with Meridian’s Ray Paul second and Tim Davis third.
The Open Wheel Modified division rolled out some 27 cars strong but it turned out to be a family affair at the front of the pack as Sulligent based brothers Bryan and Jason Brock paced the field for a one-two finish as they rode the inside racing groove to the checkers. Columbus’ Shay Knight was right on their heals with a third place run. The Mini Stock division was back at The Mag and put on a fine show with Ralph, Alabama’s Heath Minor taking the win in his Toyota 4 cylinder race car. Minor was followed by team patriarch Mike Minor, with Alabama’s Brian Dodgen finishing third. The Street Stock win was taken by Columbus’ Mike Barton trailed by Jeremy Robertson, and Danny Gable in a good field of 17 Street Stock cars.
The next event at Magnolia Motor Speedway will be the Freedom 40 as part of the Six Crown Super Late Model Southern Speedweek. The Mag will host round 4 of the six night Speedweek event that visits tracks throughout the south on Sunday evening July 1st with action at 7pm. All divisions will be in action including 6 Crown Super Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Stormpay Late Models, Street Stocks, Late Models Stocks, and Mini Stocks.
