7 races and 7 different winners as local hero GEORGE REESE takes the
FASTRAK Late Model Victory at WESTMINSTER!
June 4, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Westminster, SC).Local hero George Reese, Jr. took his first FASTRAK
Touring Event win this year at South Carolina's Westminster Speedway
on Friday night, June 1. Reese is a local member of the Series at
Westminster and proved once again in this series the locals have just
as good an opportunity to win as the Touring teams. Thirty-six cars
were on hand for the $2,000 to-win Southern/Mid-East combination
event as Reese made the list of seventh different winner in seven
races so far this year in the FASTRAK Series.
Lee Cooper won the pole position taking fast time of the event only
to be relegated to the fifth starting spot through the "kids drawing"
of the top six qualifiers. Cooper worked hard all night and worked
his way to third in the main event. Copper said before the drawing
that "sometimes that draw will bite you. It has worked for us and it
has worked against us". Cooper said before
the race they had found something that had hurt their chances all
year long and looked to be headed back to his winnings ways again.
Youngsters Willam "Mr. Smooth" Thomas from Phenix City AL,
Chris "Fergy Time" Ferguson of SC, both have tough nights as Thomas
was involved in am accident and Ferguson had electrical problems.
Youngster Brandon Haley of Lavonia GA made his way to a 14th place
finish being atop the "Young Guns" squad for the night.
2007 Late Model Hall of Fame "inductee" and always crowd favorite
Jack Pennington of Winston GA had mechanical problems in the heat and
consolation race and never had a chance to start the main event.
Travis Pennington, son of Jack, along with Scott Childress made their
way to the front only to have a collision going into turn one late in
the race with the 21 of Frankie Beard. Beard had been working hard on
attempting to pass the car of Reese for lap after lap but just
couldn't quite finish the job. Beard was beside Reese at least twelve
different times but the bottom just didn't have the grip to complete
the pass.
Hard Charger of the race was Shan Smith in the 17ss of Tampa FL as he
made an amazing run. Smith drove nine hours from Florida and didn't
get there in time for qualifying and was related in the last starting
position of a heat. Smith didn't transfer from the heat and had to
some through the consi to make the main. Starting near the rear of
the field Smith made a noted comeback to finish 9th in the main.
Quite an accomplishment for a driver that had never laid eyes on this
track before then.
The race the following night at Toccoa Speedway was postponed because
of rain and is rescheduled for this Saturday night, June 9 paying
$3,000 to-win in another Southern/Mid-East combination event. Pit
gate will open at 3:00 with grandstands opening at 5:00.
