CLARKSVILLE, TN – Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, GA has become the first Peach State weekly dirt tack to join the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series for the 2007 season. The Lavonia Speedway Crate Late Model Division will compete in 2007 under the rulebook of the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series.
The StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series gives drivers competing in a dirt late model powered by an economical GM Performance Crate Engine an opportunity to compete for a Regional point fund against other racers across the country without leaving their home track using a common set of rules and points system.
The engines for the dirt late models competing with the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series, and the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Tour are GM Performance Crate Engines. They are built and sealed at the factory to prevent competitors from making any expensive modifications.
The GM Performance Crate engines are shipped to GM Dealers throughout the country, and are readily available to be picked up and placed in the race car the same day. The aluminum-head 400 horsepower 604 engine sells for just under $5,000, and the steel-head 350 horsepower 602 engine sells for just under $3,000. The 602 engine also gets a 150-pound weight break.
Lavonia Speedway is unique in that it runs two Crate Late Model Divisions, one for the 604 engine, and one for the 602 engine. The 604 Division will become the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series Division, while the 602s will have the opportunity to compete for regional points against the 604s with the 150 pound weight break.
“Lavonia Speedway is very excited to be associated with the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series, and we’re looking forward to very successful relationship,” Lavonia Speedway Promoter Brad York said. “The StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series is going to give our crate late model competitors a great opportunity to compete not only against each other, but also against drivers at other StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series tracks on a regional level.”
The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series was founded in 2005 by Mike Vaughn of Cartersville, GA under the name of Crate Racin’ . Vaughn developed the Weekly Racing Series after StormPay.com came on board as a partner in late 2005. Vaughn is delighted to finally get a sanctioned track in his home state.
“It was because of the crate late model drivers that I started this series two years ago, and I’m happy that they now have a track in their home state under the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series banner,” Vaughn said. “As popular as crate late model racing is in Georgia, I’m happy to have Lavonia Speedway step up to the plate and recognize the value of this program for its drivers.”
In 2006, nine of the top 15 drivers in the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Tour point standings were from . According to StormPay.com DLMS officials, at least 100 of the over 450 registered drivers with the series in 2006 were from .
Vaughn said negotiations are also going on to bring the StormPay.com DLMS National Tour to Lavonia Speedway in 2007.
