A record 43 teams showed for the ASA South Watermelon Bowl at the
Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele Saturday, and unfortunately rain
delays led to a feature starting at 11:15 p.m.
Beau Slocum, of Juliette, GA, was fast qualifier at 88.219 mph, but
the inversion put him ninth to start. Rookie Anthony Campi, age 16, and
rookie Sean Bass started on the front row. Campi spun out on lap six,
taking three others to the pits, and Matt Hawkins, of Canton, took the lead.
By the mid-point, Slocum had moved into second, and was pushing
Hawkins but frustrated by cautions. Finally, at lap 122, Slocumb took
the lead and soon the win. Hawkins was second, followed by rookies Sean
Bass and Brandon Johnson. Dillon Oliver charged from 21st to finish
fifth, followed by Travis Wilson, Chris Fontaine, 17-year-old John Wes
Townley, Dalton Zehr, and Tommy King. 18 of the 28 starters completed
all 125 laps, and 19 starters were ASA rookies.
In the 15-lap race for non-qualifiers, Max Gresham, a 14-year-old
from Milner, GA, led every lap, and he and runner-up Logan Dernoshek
advanced to the feature.
The series moves to South GA Motorsports Park June 2 for a 100-lap
race. www.asalatemodelssouth.com
This Friday, May 11, is the Opening Night of the 1st full season of
the Castrol GTX Friday Night Drags at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
John Wes Townley, the 17-year-old from Watkinsville, is now a Wood
Brothers/JTG Racing developmental driver, complete with a PR writer who
tells us that he finished 26th in his Hooters Pro Cup debut at
Shenandoah last Thurs.
Earlier at a Toledo, OH, ASA LM race, he crashed in qualifying, and
used a back-up car to finish 19th in a race slowed by 13 cautions for 71
laps.
At NASCAR Busch East Series Greased Lightning 150 at historic
Greenville-Pickens Speedway, he drove the Zaxby's/BB&T Chevrolet to an
impressive 10th-place finish after starting 20th.
And he was eighth at the ASA South LM race at the Watermelon.

One of the highlights of the evening at Cochran Motor Speedway Sat.
was the Old Timers Race. Four competitors dug out the suits and helmets
to take to the track in the 6 lap race. Stevie Sapp showed he still has
what it takes by claiming the win in the 5 car currently driven by his
son Justin in the Cadet Division. Jerry Norris in the 02 finished
second, Earl Lloyd in the 77A was third, and Alfred Graham finished
fourth in car 5. It was a delight to see all of the smiles and happiness
that surrounded this race. (from REV. TODD SHEARIN)

The Southern Regional Racing Series for LMs visited Penton (AL)
Raceway Friday for a forty lapper. Tony Knowles, of Tyrone, grabbed the
pole, with Fayetteville’s Ricky Williams, flanking him on the front row.
A very large crowd watched Knowles go out to the early lead. On lap six,
Rusty Harmon, of Columbus, left the track in turn two. When the field
went green, the red flag flew immediately as Shane Clanton, of Locust
Grove, climbed the front stretch wall, flipping on his top at the
entrance to turn one. He climbed out, uninjured, but, was unable to
continue.
After lap 14, Tony Knowles led Jake Knowles, of Tyrone, and Williams.
The final laps were the Knowles show, as the two went side by side
for the lead until Jake got out of shape, enabling Williams to get back
by. Tony Knowles, led all forty laps for the win, followed by Williams
and Jake Knowles.

been rescheduled for Sat., June 23. Mark Whitener is leading the NLMS
points, with one win in the first eight races.
Speed51 rates the Underclassmen in racing, and ranks Casey Roderick #6:
6) Casey Roderick (Legends) - At the end of last year, there was no one
hotter in the United States in the Legends Car ranks than Casey
Roderick. He won the Summer Shootout Series Pro Division Championship.
He won the National Championship event for the Pro Division at Lanier
National Speedway. He won the Mason-Dixon Meltdown Pro Division race.
He won the Legends Series race at Orlando SpeedWorld as part of the PRI
show. And so far this year, he’s already won three races at tough
places like Atlanta Motor Speedway and Lanier. He’s only 14 years of
age and has so much talent. His biggest downfall right now is the fact
that he’s still only racing Legends. He needs to harness that talent in
something that will help him go to the next level.
Danny Peoples led all thirty laps in Super Late Model action at
Talladega Short Track Saturday Night. Chris Mullinax finished in the
runner-up spot with Terry Smith third. Fourth spot went to Jason Wilson
with Tim Roszell rounding out the top five.
Adam Martin picked up his first win of the season in Crate action.
Logan Yates finished second and Jimmy Elkins third.
This Saturday Night May 12 TST has a full race program plus the
first of two appearances for the O’Reilly United Mini Sprints.

“Lanier National Speedway has a zero tolerance for alcohol
possession and consumption. Before competition Sat. night, a driver was
asked to take a breathalyzer test. He agreed to take the test and passed
with a 000 reading. We appoligize to the driver, his crew, and his
sponsors for any embarrassment that this may have caused. It is Lanier’s
commitment to provide a safe as possible racing program for our racers
and fans. Lanier will continue to monitor all aspects of the facility
and do what is best for the sport. Drivers are subject to breathalyzer
tests at any time while on Lanier’s property. No Alcohol is allowed in

Marty Lance has done a great job getting the once-closed Hartwell
Speedway back in action this spring, and his car count is growing. His
lightly paid crew includes announcer Terry Mize and wife Carol, and
flagman James Shirley is Mize’s son-in-law. Between race dates, the
family hangs out at the Vanna BBQ, on Hwy. 17 south of Royston. If
Lance can stop a few big infield haulers from blocking the view, and
keep the announcer from yodeling and singing, the crowds will find his
track.

Boyd’s Speedway, Friday May 4th.
The first night of racing at the re-opened Boyd's Speedway is
finally in the history books, and history will judge it a great success.
Despite the threat of thunderstorms, promoters George Shaw and Russ
Russkin plowed ahead and and were rewarded with a decent car count and a
great crowd of fans.
In spite of a track that could have used a little more water (okay,
it was dry as a popcorn poot), the fans were treated to an excellent
show, and the show was kept moving along by the almost entirely new
ground crew. Thanks again to all the fans and racers for your continued
support and encouragement of the new Boyd's Speedway. from Steve

Thanks again to all the fans and racers for your continued
support and encouragement of the new Boyd's Speedway. from Steve
