ADAMS AND SOWELL WIN O'REILLY USCS DIXIE DOUBLES
Third-generation driver Lee Sowell of Horn Lake, MS picked up his first-ever sprint car win on Saturday night by besting a tough 23-car field in the second 25-lap feature race of the evening for the O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA. (John Sellars Photo)
WOODSTOCK, GA - Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL and third-generation driver Lee Sowell of Horn Lake, MS won O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series 25-lap feature races Saturday night at Dixie Speedway.
The win for Adams in the Milk Movers, Inc./Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott was his 18th of the season, and Sowell's victory in the Hinchman Indy Maxim/Ostrich was his first-ever in a sprint car.
The win in the first feature race of the night made Adams eligible for a $10,000 bonus if he could win the second feature race from the 22nd starting spot. Adams kept the crowd on their feet as he worked through the field, but came up just a few car-lengths short in the end.
Adams started the first feature from the outside front row after winning the ButlerBuilt second ten-lap heat race from the eighth starting spot. K&N Filters Pole Award Winner Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN took the lead at the start of the race, and led the first 13 tours around the 3/8-mile clay oval before Adams took over on lap 14, and led the rest of the way.
Kenny Jacobs of Holmesville, OH took the second spot in the Woodring Racing JEI Performance/Hampshire after passing Gray for the position with five laps to go. Gray had to settle for third in the C&B Mushrooms/Goodson Farms Maxim/Wesmar. Curt Michael of Ocean View, DE finished fourth in the BK Trucking J&J/Ott.
Greg Wilson of Benton Ridge, OH drove the Tim Hogan's Carpets Maxim/Hampshire to a fifth-place finish, and Koolbeans Trophies third ten-lap heat race winner Doug Day of Winder, GA was sixth in the Gotta Race Eagle/Dingler. Mike Brecht started 14th in the All-Star Plumbing Heating and Air Eagle/Hampshire and finished seventh to earn the Huggins Cams Hard Charger Award.
Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL finished eighth in the Martin Structures, Inc./Food Grade Transport Schnee/ZRE, with ninth going to Randy Helton of Palmetto, GA in the Town and Country Dodge Maxim/ERI, and Johnny Bridges of Cherryville, NC rounded out the top ten in the C&B Mushrooms/Stainless Fabricators J&J/Bridges Ford.
Gray found a groove around Dixie Speedway to his liking while on his way to winning the Engler Machine and Tool first ten-lap heat race by using the high line in turns one and two, and racing around the bottom of the track in turns three and four. Gray used that same groove in the first feature race, and led the first 13 laps.
Michael was able to get around Day for the third spot on lap four, and by lap ten was closing on Gray and Adams. Gray had pressure from Adams, as the lead duo worked heavy lapped traffic. With Gray committed to the bottom groove in turns three and four, Adams went to the high side off turn four to make the pass for the lead on lap 14.
When Jacobs got around Gray for the second spot on lap 20, Adams had pulled out to a half straightaway lead, and cruised home for his series leading 93rd career O'Reilly USCS victory in the caution-free race. Didn't have much time to celebrate, as the biggest challenge of the night was before him as he prepared to start 22nd in the second 25-lap main event of the evening.
The Milk Movers, Inc./Goodson Farms Racing Team sandwiched the field for the second feature, as Adams' stepson and teammate Bryn Gohn of Malabar, FL in the Milk Movers, Inc. Shaw/Ott led the field down for the start from the K&N Pole Position.
Outside front row starter and 12-lap B-Main winner Josh Weller of Mertztown, PA took the lead in turn one driving the Wave Tech Associates J&J/Ott, and Sowell hustled up into the second spot, followed by Gohn.
Brian Maddox of Brandon, FL made a couple of early race moves to pass R.J. Johnson of Decatur, TN for the fifth spot on lap three, and then got around Shane Nelson of Chattanooga, TN for the fourth position on lap eight. By the tenth lap, Jacobs had charged up from the 18th starting spot to eighth.
Adams had worked his way up to 15th spot by lap 12, and then got to close up on the leaders on lap 13 when debris on the front straightaway brought out the caution flag. Weller led Sowell, Gohn, Maddox, Nelson, Johnson, and Jacobs down for the restart.
Matt Tiffany of Daytona Beach, FL slammed the fourth turn wall on the restart, and his Independent Printing Shaw/Ott was done for the night, but he took home the Weld Racing Hard Luck Award. Adams lined up 13th for the restart, while Jacobs got around both Johnson and Nelson to move into the top five. Adams was up to seventh by the 15th lap.
A lot of passing took place around Dixie Speedway during the next few laps, as Adams passed Jacobs for fifth on lap 17, and Sowell stepped to the outside of Weller in turn four to take the lead on lap 18. Jacobs moved back around Adams for the fifth spot on lap 19, only to see Adams go back by on lap 20.
Sowell pulled away from Weller, who began to fade and was passed by both Gohn and Adams in the closing laps. Sowell went on to post the win followed by Gohn in second, Adams third, and Weller in the fourth spot. Maddox finished fifth in the Concrete Science/Crawford Tire Shaw/Central Florida Machine.
Jacobs dropped back to finish sixth, with Wilson coming home in the seventh spot. Nelson finished eighth in the Nelson Racing Shaw/Slobuilt, with ninth going to Johnson in the Tinsley Engineering/Georgia Performance Graphics J&J/ZRE, and Gray rounding out the top ten.
The "Fall Brawl" for the O'Reilly USCS continues on Friday night, November 4 and Saturday night, November 5 at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL, with a full racing program each night.
