Day claims 8th win at Dixie Speedway
WOODSTOCK - With the success he's enjoyed in 2005, Tim Day will be disappointed when Dixie Speedway's season ends in November and the 2006 campaign arrives a few months later.
Day added another chapter to his banner season by claiming a flag-to-flag victory in the 30-lap Super Late Models feature in front of a capacity grandstand crowd on "Everybody's a $1 night" at the venerable Woodstock dirt track on Saturday night.
"I don't know how to explain it," Day said shortly after winning his eighth race since the 2005 season commenced in May. "We've had a real good qualifying year and (we've) been fortunate a lot to start on the front. But, we've had a good car just about all year long."
Day, who captured his first Super Late Models track championship at Dixie last month, recorded the fastest time during qualifying laps. As a result, the Alpharetta native started on the front row and quickly seized the lead once the green flag dropped. Although the race was restarted several times due to caution flags, Day never relinquished the lead.
"It seemed like it would take a lap or two to get going (and) kind of get away from the ones behind us," he said. "I really don't know how much a lead we had on them. But it still took me a lap or two to get going."
Phil Coltrane of Freehome settled for second and Hiram's Ken Rupp took third. Douglasville resident Lamar Haygood finished fourth followed by Brandon Rose of Columbus.
Rome's Jason Smith extended his winning streak in the Limited Late Models classification by capturing his fourth consecutive checkered flag in the division's caution-filled 20-lap feature. It was his fifth win in eight starts at Dixie Speedway and Rome Speedway this season.
"We just wanted to get the lead at the beginning," Smith said. "That way it would be ours to lose. I don't know what was going on behind me, but we had caution after caution. It was kind of getting frustrating sitting in there (with) a caution every two laps. But we lasted it out."
Fayetteville's Glen Morris took second followed by Cartersville resident Dale Thurman and Cary Seres of Canton. Holly Springs resident Jerry Wallace finished fifth.
Canton's Chris Sizemore held off Wren Gibby of Douglasville to win the Super Bombers feature. Paulding County's Troy Dixon took third followed by Cumming residents Dwayne Sexton and Lucas Motte.
Douglasville's Justin Shipley took the checkered flag in the Economy Bombers feature. Jimmy Fetterman of Woodstock took second and Rome's Scott Pilcher settled for third. Larry Bryant of Rome and Acworth's D. J. Murdock rounded out the top five.
Bobby Norris of Blue Ridge won the Cruisers feature. Cumming's Nathan Allie took second followed by Villa Rica resident Scott Mohr and Darrin Voyles of Canton.
