Chitwood triumphs against star-studded field in Papa John’s Pizza Southern All-Stars Super Late Models Championship
WOODSTOCK — Facing the strongest field of Super Late Models drivers to grace Dixie Speedway this season, Dusty Chitwood responded with an impressive win in the Papa John’s Pizza Southern All-Stars Super Late Models Championship on Saturday night.
The Hiram native, who was winless in four-plus seasons in Dixie’s Super Late Models division, passed Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs with five laps to go and captured the checkered flag in the 50-lap feature, which consisted of competitors from the O’Reilly Southern All-Stars Dirt Racing Series in addition to Dixie’s regular contingent of drivers.
“That’s my first Super Late Models win,” said Chitwood, who collected $5,000 and a large trophy for his victory. “For it to be a big event like this, paying big money against all these guys — some of these guys race for a living. I’ve got a regular job (and) I work every day. To come out here and win, I can’t believe it. It’s unbelievable.”
After qualifying fourth, Chitwood stayed in the top five while Rainey jumped out to an early lead and Cumming’s Greg Knight of the Southern All-Stars followed close behind. When racing resumed after a caution flag on lap 23, Rainey began to extend his lead and appeared destined to reach victory lane and take home the big check.
But once the leaders hit lap traffic 10 laps, Chitwood used his position to his advantage and vaulted past Knight and Rainey.
“I sat back there and rode and rode and rode,” Chitwood said. “I watched the guys in front of me, (who) were all real close, nose to tail. When we got to lap traffic, they started trying to figure out which way they were going to go. It’s a lot easier to sit behind somebody and watch two or three people to figure out which way you need to go.”
Once he grabbed the lead, Chitwood was determined to hold on for the remainder of the race.
“I knew when I got out in front if the car didn’t break, that they were going to have to knock me out of the way to get around me,” he said. “I was going to protect every way that I could. If they passed me, they were going to have to take me out.”
After the race, Chitwood celebrated his first win in Dixie’s top division with his crew, family and a legion of loyal fans.
“You race every week and you’re so close, but you can’t ever get that win,” Chitwood said. “Everybody keeps telling you, ‘Man it’s going to come, it’s going to come.’ And I guess if it wasn’t for all my fans and stuff encouraging me — and I know that they come every week to watch me. Sometimes you just want to give up, but you get to realize how many people want you to be here and enjoy watching you race. And to stand right here and take that checkered flag — that makes it all worth it.”
Rainey settled for second and Knight took third. Morganton’s Shane Tankersley of the Southern All-Stars finished fourth followed by fellow All-Star driver Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C.
In the Limited Late Models division, Villa Rica’s Jake Herrell took the lead on lap five and held off Cartersville’s Chris Castillo and Dawsonville’s Chad Kimbrall to win his third feature of the season.
“I knew Castillo was right there with me,” Herrell said. “And I know he’s a real good driver. And Mike Bruner, he won last week at Rome. So, I guess he’s up there with us now and he’s running good. But I know those are two real tough competitors and I liked racing with them.”
Kimbrall took second followed by Castillo and Michael Page of Douglasville. Rome’s Todd Murphy finished fifth.
Alan Brewer of Avondale Estates claimed the checkered flag in the Sportsman division to earn his first win of the season.
Chris Fennell of Dallas finished second followed by Douglasville natives Steve Seagraves and Pete Cochran. Woodstock’s Richard Thomas rounded out the top five.
Douglasville’s Michael Keener ran just as well in a backup car as he does in his top vehicle and he won his third Super Bomber feature at Dixie Speedway this season.
Keener was running in a backup car provided by owner Troy Dixon after his No. 1 car’s motor broke midway through the Super Bomber feature at Rome Speedway last week.
Mableton’s Keith Morton settled for second and Acworth’s Joey Kendall took third. Steve Lee of Euharlee and Temple’s Roscoe Collins finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Woodstock’s Terry Law passed Justin Shipley of Douglasville on the first turn of the final lap and held on for his first Economy Bomber feature win this season.
Shipley took second followed by Woodstock’s Kenneth Burns and Daniel Brewer of Avondale Estates. Rome’s Eric Hamby finished fifth.
In the Cruiser feature, Woodstock’s James Gilfoil earned his second victory at Dixie Speedway this season.
Dallas native Keith Shuler finished second followed by Taylorsville’s Chris Armer and Jackie Thompson of Canton. Kennesaw’s Corey Stancil rounded out the top five.
Next week, Dixie Speedway will hold a Demolition Derby for big cars in addition to a full racing program. Admission to the grandstand is $12 for adults, $5 for students between the ages of 9 and 17 and free for children 8 and under. The action kicks off at 7 p.m.
