Columbus Mississippi-The next and final event of the 2005 racing season at the “Baddest Bullring in the South” will culminate as Columbus Speedway will play host to the 5th Annual Commercial Dispatch Possum Town Grand Prix presented by Cliburn Tank Lines held on Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, November 25th and 26th with racing at 6pm each day. A practice session has been added this year on Thanksgiving night, November 24th from 7pm until 10pm.
The 5th Annual Commercial Dispatch Possum Town Grand Prix will take place on Thanksgiving weekend featuring triple headline events at the infamous high banked 3/10’s mile clay oval with the $8,000 possible to win PTGP Super Late Model Championship events, $2,000 to win Cruiser World Championship, the $2,000 to win PTGP Open Wheel Modified Championship, plus a $1,000 to win PTGP Crate Model/Late Model Stock Championship. Also on the card is a $700 to win PTGP Championship for the Street Stocks with 4-Cylinders vying for $500 to win. The huge event drew a record setting 275 race teams to the Bullring last November and a new record is expected to be eclipsed this year as interest appears to be at its greatest level.
This year’s format will once again have two Super Late Model main events as Johnny Stokes will continue the fan friendly format as Super Late Models will have two (2) full shows with a $2,000 to win and $200 to start 30-lap main event on Friday night the 25th and a $5,000 to win and $300 to start 50-lap main event on Saturday night the 26th. There are also “Tame the Beast” Bullring Bonuses on the line for a driver who can win their first Super Late Model main event at Columbus Speedway. There is a $500 bonus up for grabs on Friday night and a substantial $1,000 bonus on the line on Saturday night as enticement for drivers who have never “Tamed the Beast” and visited Victory Lane at Columbus Speedway since 2001 when the track went under the successful reigns of Johnny Stokes and company. Drivers must contact Stokes by phone or email to register their intent to compete to be eligible for the bonuses. A $500 high point’s bonus from Brown Engineering and Southern Maintenance helps to make it an $8,000 possible to win event on Thanksgiving weekend at the “Baddest Bullring in the South”. Defending event Super Late Model winners were Anthony Rushing taking the Friday night “Thanksgiving 30” event while “Cat Daddy” Clint Smith held off Ken Schrader to claim the $5,000 to win Possum Town Grand Prix Championship.
This year will see the GM Crate Models combined with the Late Model Stocks in a $1,000 to win and $75 to start main event. Both the 602 and 604 GM Crate engines will be allowed the run while receiving added rear spoiler and weight breaks. Last year’s Late Model Stock winner was Terry Mosley.
Local divisions will also see their share of the spotlight especially with the 5th Annual $2,000 to win 2-Person Cruiser World Championship that has saw the Mike Pearson and Todd Glusenkamp duo from West Point, Mississippi take the crown topping a stout 47-car field in last year’s version of the Cruiser World Championship. Cruiser action gets under way Friday night November 25th with four 10-lap qualifying races transferring the top 4 finishers. Action continues on Saturday night with two B-Mains transferring the top 4 from each to complete the 24-car field. The 2-Person Cruiser World Championship will see the Cruiser teams go 25-laps for the $2,000 first place prize and World Championship Trophies.
The $2,000 to win PTGP Modified Championship has steadily drawn competitive entrants from across the Mid-South and this year should be no different plus all the local division PTGP Championships. Sprint Car ace Tim Crawley of Mabeville, Arkansas won the Modified event over a 52-car field last year while Scott Gable the Mini Stock winner, and David Honeycutt the Street Stock Champion.
Local division qualifying races will be held on Friday evening November 26th with B-Mains and Main events on Saturday evening November 27th. Racing is set for 6:00pm in the evening each day.
