Woodstock, GA. After several weeks of rain outs, Dixie Speedway finally had clear weather for racing, and what a night it was! The Speedway held the 11th Annual Bill Ingram Memorial Super Late Model Championship with a full crowd on hand and 28 Super Late Models in the pits to qualify for the race held in honor of one of the most popular drivers in Dixie’s history, Bill Ingram. Ingram lost his battle with cancer in 1999, but the memory of Bill lingers in the minds of his many fans and fellow competitors.
The night began with qualifying and Tyrone, GA’s Tony Knowles setting fast time. Cousin Jody Knowles was just a tick of the clock slower in second giving the Knowles family the front row for the feature event.
Tony Knowles took the lead at the green flag followed with Jody Knowles, Ricky Williams and Steven Endicott nipping at his rear the first lap. On lap two, Jody got a little high in the groove and spun in turn two sending him to the rear of the field on the restart. On after the restart, Tim Day begin spinning on the back stretch collecting several cars in the melee. Only Wayne Echols and Richard Yeoman would be damaged enough to have their night ended.
With the green finally thrown, the race ran several laps with the top five cars running close together. With Tony under pressure from Ricky Williams and Mike Head out front also followed closely by Luther Jenkins and Frank Ingram, many in the crowd watched as Jody Knowles steadily made his way back from twenty fifth to fourth by lap 26.
Around lap 30, Frank Ingram, son of Bill, had made his move into the top three and fought side by side with longtime veteran Mike Head until capturing the second spot at lap 30. After a brief caution for the spinning car of Dusty Chitwood, Frank took the high groove and battled for first with Tony finally taking the lead for good on lap 36. Ingram held onto the lead for the next 14 laps and took home the checkered flag and the trophy bearing his father’s name.
Following Ingram across the line: Tony Knowles, Mike Head, Luther Jenkins, Jody Knowles. Sixth through tenth went to Steve Endicott, Ricky Williams, Gary McPherson, Tracy Watson, and Dusty Chitwood.
Bobby Tucker won his first Limited Late Model feature of the season. Oliver Gentry, Jason Smith, Mark Bunch, and Mike McConnell finished second through fifth. The race ran smoothly with the worst incident of the evening coming on lap 16 when the throttle hung on the racer of John Williams going into turn three. Williams would plow straight into the car of Travis Millwood then make heavy contact with the wall. Both drivers were Ok.
Jerry Fowler added to his list of feature wins as he took the lead of the Crate Late Model class and lead every lap. Alan Brewer, Mark Page, Chuck Padgett and Richie Williams completed the top five.
The Super Bomber would see several lead changes before Chris Sizemore would grab the lead for good and win his first feature of the season. Greg Ledford, Roy Patterson, Tony McDowell, and Lee McElwaney finished second through fifth respectively.
John Binger took his first win of the season in the Economy Bomber. Johnny Morrison pressured Binger but settled for second. Justin Shipley moved up from his twelfth place starting position to finished third ahead of Chuck Page and Jeff Jacobs.
In the Pony feature, Ross Baines started dead last in the twenty-two car field and came to the front for his second win of the season. Following Baines across the line were Benton Morris, Adam Bryant, Cody Sisson, and Lee Sisson.
The team of Russ Trantham and Shane Stancil were victorious in the Cruiser class, while Adam Ledford took the win in the Spectator races.
